Where are International Students Going to Study?

 

During the 2014-2015 school year, a staggering 974,926 international students came to the United States to seek better opportunities in early, secondary, and, most popularly, post-secondary education. The question is, which places are these foreign guests choosing to go to in America for their study abroad experiences? Recently, U.S. News released a list of the top 10 U.S. destinations for international intellectuals, and some may be surprising. This article will explore these locations and why they are so enticing to incoming students. Does your state make the list?

 

10. INDIANA

INDIANA 

With well over 20,000 international students enrolled in its schools, Indiana is the 10th most popular state for international students to live and attend schools. Although this may seem like an unlikely destination, there are many factors that attract foreign guests to the Hoosier state. For instance, there are plenty of cultural activities to do in Indiana including going to museums, seeing the famous Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, or even watching an American pastime, racing, at the Indianapolis 500 speed race. In addition to these attractions, Indiana also boasts some of the U.S.’s best private and public institutions including the University of Notre Dame, Purdue University, and Indiana University.

 

9. MICHIGAN

Coming in as the 9th most popular state for international students, Michigan offers students many opportunities. For instance, while enjoying their stay in the state that borders 4 of the Great Lakes, students can enjoy many outdoor activities including fishing, camping, biking, swimming, boating, kayaking, etc. In addition to this, Michigan is a great place to improve English language skills. For instance, schools such as Lansing Community College, Washtenaw Community College, Michigan State University, and the University of Michigan all have ESL programs to help non-native speakers advance in the study of the U.S.’s most-spoken language. Furthermore, Michigan’s big universities, like the University of Michigan, have thousands of programs, student-run clubs, and activities that can allow newcomers interact and make friendships that last a lifetime.

  

8. OHIO

With Ohio’s low cost of living and excellent educational prospects, of course international students are drawn to this location. Many students coming to Ohio are attending both high school and college. At the collegiate level, popular choices include the University of Cincinatti, University of Toledo, Kent State University, Ohio University, and Ohio State University. OSU is a very special option because it offers orientations to Chinese students before they come to the U.S. In Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhuo, Chinese students and their parents can learn about the university, Ohio, and American college life before even journeying to the United States.

Florida, the 7th most popular destination of international students, not only has amazing beaches and a tropical climate for the enjoyment of foreign guests, it also has many prestigious schools for them to chase their academic dreams. Floridian schools offer many education options for students from the earliest years of education all the way to collegiate education. Students can not only attend Florida’s amazing colleges such as Full Sail University, University of Florida, University of Miami, University of South Florida, etc., international students can also study in a plethora of Florida’s public and private elementary, middle, and high schools.

 

6. PENNSYLVANIA

Rich in American history, culture, and politics, Pennsylvania comes in at #6 on the list of the top 10 most popular states for international students. Illinois makes a great destination for foreign visitors with its notable cuisine, wide-ranging climate, and wonderful universities. The most popular university for international students to attend in Illinois is that University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign which attracted 11,223 international students in the 2014-2015 school year. Going to school in Illinois allows visitors to make abundant academic advances and also allows them to enjoy true American culture.

 

4. MASSACHUSETTS

MASSACHUSETTS 


The 4th most well-liked state for international study in America is the Bay state, Massachusetts. This northeastern state is extremely diverse and culturally rich offering international students many opportunities. Of the 65,000 students attending U.S. high schools in 2012, a percentage of these attending Boston International High School, a school devoted to the cultivation of foreign students. There are also many other elementary schools and high schools throughout Massachusetts that international students can attend and flourish in. Obviously, there are a multitude of colleges in Massachusetts that are home to many international guests including Boston University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, Boston College, Tufts University, etc. In Massachusetts, students can experience sprawling metropolis and unique local culture all while excelling in many different fields of study including technology, the humanities, mathematics, and more!

 

3. TEXAS

The home of the cowboy, Texas, is also the third more common spot in the U.S. for international educational exchange. Texas contains some of the United States’ most famous cities including Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, El Paso, and Fort Worth which all provide thousands of different local activities to enjoy and restaurants for study abroad students to taste southern cooking and barbecue. Along with the ability to have fun in the cities with various historic sites, museums, parks, eateries, etc., students can also interact with nature by experiencing Texas’ grasslands, prairies, forests, and coasts. When they are not relishing in all that Texas has to offer for leisure, students are attending Texas’ best schools such as the University of Dallas and Texas A&M University.

 

2. NEW YORK

Of course, the city with the most famous U.S. city has come in at the top of the list of popular U.S. study abroad destinations. In fact, in the 2014-2015 school year, New York served as the American hometown of around 100,000 international students, and about 8% of all international high school students in the U.S. were studying in the Empire state. Students are attracted to New York for numerous reasons including the Big Apple, worldwide cuisine, other tourist attractions, and, most importantly, its representation of the American dream. As an international hub, it should come as now surprise that there are hundreds of elementary, middle, and high schools that offer admittance of and special programming for international students. Foreign students engaging in American high school education seek out California more than any other U.S. destination to receive their diploma. In fact, out of the 65,000 international high school students in America, about 18% are in C.A. according to U.S.A. Today. In addition, attending California’s higher education institutions typically leads to promising careers in technology, entertainment, and engineering. For most international college students, choices like University of California-Los Angeles, University of California-Berkeley, and the University of Southern California are all tremendous contenders. In fact, these three schools had a combined total of almost 30,000 international students enrolled in 2014!
